On Ladakh and Tibetan Medicine;
Ladakh is a geographical region in the state of Jammu and kashmir, India. 84% of ladakh's population lives in villages and rural areas which are not easy to reach due to the Himalaya Range. Resources are scarce, no hospitals or close by healthcare services nearby, making everyday life difficult in this harsh environment.
Infant mortality rate is among the highest in the world, and during delivery many women die, from preventable causes.
For centuries, the only medical system, which was accessible to Ladakhis, has been the amchi.Amchis are traditional doctors following Tibetan medicine. And still today amchi medicine is an important component of public health especially in remote areas.
About the Film;
Every year, Amchi Karma Chodon , travels to the most remote areas in ladakh to raise awareness on women and child healthcare. The documentary film is about Amchi Karma Chodon and her baby Teljor's last journey into the wilderness of the harsh and difficult landscape of the Himalayas. She travels to ZANSKAR, to reach her students to conduct a final course on women and child healthcare. Before her last journey starts, she also stops by at Korzok village near the Tso-Moriri Lake (the highest lake in the world) where she tries to reach the nomads, to provide preventive healthcare knowledge.
Amchi Karma, rather then providing healthcare herself to far away areas, advocates for the education of young amchis, as she thinks raising and empowering youth will promote a more sustainable public healthcare model. The students she previously elected from various villages, were brought to Leh the capital city,to attend a four years full time program called "DUSRAPA" where Amchi Karma Chodon has been teaching Tibetan Medicine as part of th NGO she is working for "the Ladakh Society for Traditional Medicines". After their graduation, students went back to their villages to serve to their communities, who have become Amchis themselves. This journey is to make sure, students are doing alright and to help them conducting their own awareness campaigns in various villages, so that they can rely on their own in the near future..
The film , conveys to tell the story of an inspirational teacher and her students, in Ladakh, by giving a glimpse of a real life story dedicated to social work and public healthcare. And, questions the future of Amchis, as it has become a tradition under the threat of being lost.
